5 Steps To Creating A Capsule Wardrobe

What’s a capsule wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a concise, curated selection of timeless clothing. It can vary from person to person based on our differing lifestyles, but the best pieces are the kind that can be worn at work, during cocktail hour, and dressed down on the weekend

Where to start?

1.First consider your colour palette
– this will ensure each piece you select will co-ordinate and harmonize.

If you know your seasonal colour palette this will really help. For example, a wardrobe where all items of clothing are either ‘cool’ or ‘warm’ in tone will mean you’ll be able to create more outfits that work well together - looking more polished and refined. However, if your wardrobe consists of clothes that are both ‘cool’ and ‘warm’ it’s going to be more challenging to bring balance to your look, as the colours won’t blend as well together making it more difficult to create many different looks.

Jenna lyons, all clothes in these images are warm-toned and blend well together. However, in the left hand image she’s holding a silver (cool-toned) bag, my preference would have been to see a warmer tone.

2. Get to know what style and fit of clothing suits your unique body-shape.

Don’t buy into trends if they don’t suit your body-shape. For example, if the trend one year is a puffed sleeve but you have wide shoulders then avoid buying this type of top, as it’ll only enhance your shoulders further, making them appear even wider than they already are, which will create an imbalance to your proportions.

3. Edit and organise your wardrobe.
Identify what you wear most often and invest in these ‘basics’

Edit your wardrobe and place clothing back into your wardrobe grouping types of items together e.g. all your dresses together, all your trousers together etc and within that similar colours together.

4. Strongly consider your lifestyle now
Edit your wardrobe for your lifestyle of today, making space for those items that you’re going to get the most wear out of. Your wardrobe then becomes more functional and choosing what to wear day-to-day becomes easier!

For those items that you’re not ready to let go of, pack them away (to make space in your wardrobe, as you only want to be viewing those items that you’ll definitely be wearing day-to-day) and revisit these items again in a years time.

5. Invest in quality items; spend as much as you can afford
When you go shopping, shop with intention and for clothes that will wear well.

Go armed with a list of items to source that when added to your wardrobe will be the missing piece(s) to creating many different outfits. Try not to get distracted by what might be THE most gorgeous piece but when you get it home it has no place in your wardrobe - maybe it doesn’t fit with your current lifestyle or maybe you have several items in that style/colour already!
